yes I have rebuilt many 12 engines you have to completely split the motor to get to the starter gear, sorry it's not you want to hear, but I will say I have messed with many 12 motors and mine included and have never run into that problem. How many miles on bike?

Yea, I would have to agree that's what did it also that's alot of starting cycles in 37,000 km. If you are gonna go that far as tearing your motor down you should do a leak down and compression check first, because you might have some other things that are gonna be a future problem, like valve seats, rings, cylinder to piston clearance and bearing wear those are some of the basics and if you tear the motor apart you might correctly take of them or you just might be tearing the motor out for something else. I would definately think about it if you plan on keeping the bike. later hope everything works out for ya.:2thumbs:

Ya I plan on giving the motor a complete going over. This was my second bike (still miss my first one) and I have no Intentions of getting rid of it. It's a little rough around the edges but is still one of the fastest bikes in my area. May also look into some internal mods while the motor is out

Put a 1287 kit in it and with that many miles check your dogs on your gears if they are rounded off some, but not to badly you can send your transmission and get them undercut instead of new ones. The 1287 will really wake your 12 because it raises the compression and it gives you forged pistons so, you can play with nitrous alot more safely than stock cast pistions, my 12 has a 1287, with built head, megacycle cams, balancer delete, undercut gears and 2 stages of nitrous. lots of things you can do to a 12 later

careful how big you go with cams because than you'll need heavy duty springs and ti retainers and possibly stainless steel valves. When I did mine by the time I was done with my head I had well over 2000.00 in work and parts. Personally to do it on a budget do the big bore kit and spray. You can have a lot of fun with just those two and not get to ridiculous with the funds.
