Pinching the diaphram under the top cap can stop the wastegate moving thru its normal range, may overboost
Can cause a cut in the diaphram then boost pressure cannot push the valve off its seat , again overboost

you cannot tell if you pinched the diaphragm by pulling vacuum or applying pressure. You need to put it together carefully so you dont pinch it.
If there is a rupture in the diaphragm then you can tell by applying pressure to the top.
