    put a helicoil in it done it before but on a mtc basket

    ...if you're going to attempt to thread aluminum, you want about double the diameter of the hole in surrounding material thickness (ie 1/4 thread needs 1/2 thick material). Also, you want to use a slightly smaller drill/reamer before you tap, as you're shooting for a slightly higher % of thread in aluminium vs steel... tap charts are your friend. If it's borderline, a thread insert (helicoil) will probably work a little better. Some people hate on helicoils, but we had a ooooold small block bracket car motor that was probably 95% helicoils..... called it the Helimonster.... that thing is probably still running in some test-n-tune hero somewhere.... done right they will last as long as any other thread.

    Not enough room for a helicoil. Not enough material. Longer M4 is an OK fix. Weld up is the best way, but not practical in the middle of a race season. I was able to get a 10-32 to fit for a couple of months before I could pull the basket and weld it up to do it correctly.
