cleaning aluminum engine cases

ripping motor completely apart, what would be the best way to clean cases? hot tank? part washer. will it remove gasket material to? what do you uses?

Machine shop will do it best. For the outer cases spray with mag Polish but have the water hose ready that stuff will stain cast aluminum quick!

Machine shop will but them on a aluminum solvent hot tank den they will clean it with media glass. Best way to clean them.

think i am going to try simple green in a plastic tub. don't trust anyone around here not to mark up the cases. mostly i just need to get suzuki bond and gasket material off. i don't want to pull the 2 bearings out of the case either. so no blasting. glass media blasted a dirt bike engine before, did look nice.

Engine De Greaser and then hot pressure washer or reg pressure washer Come out like new.
The cheap Auto Zone brand works good.

i use glass media or fine walnut shells. an my shops hot tank. just make sure you get all the glass out...it'll make quick work on your new bearings.

I spray them down with gasoline, that gets all grease out of pores. I then use the cheap yellow degreaser from the dollar store simply awesome and cases look brand new when done.

Your gonna have to do some hand cleaning regardless to get the sealer off cases. The way I do it softens it when split though

I use oven cleaner and a pressure washer on mines for the last four years and it works great.

Go to truck pro get you a gallon of dt-901 cost about $11.00. I use to clean my frame and motor on my eighteen wheeler. This stuff is super strong you need to dilute it 4:1. Use gloves this stuff will dry out your skin. Spray the motor down let it sit five-ten mins spray it off and u should be good. If its really saturated with grease repeat those steps. For gasket material I used a brass wire brush and brake parts cleaner to remove the old gasket material. The brass wire brush will not scratch your cases. You can get a three pack wire brush kit from Walmart less than ten bucks. I would post pics of my motor I just did but I can't get pics to upload from iPad or iPhone.

just to let you know, i used engine degreeser after i took a brass pot scrub brush and cleaned off gasket and bond. then i used dawn soap in a utility tub. blew every hole and passage out with air after. then oiled the 2 bearing in the case. came out looking like new. next time will be with simple green in a plastic tub with some dawn soap.
