    Default noisey valvetrain

I have a 98 zx9. I was at the races this past weekend and at idle the motor was not noisey but at above 4000 rpm it was clattering and making all kinds of noises, from the top end. Do I have a bucket and shim that is hanging up, really loose, or did one of the bolts break that holds down the cams? Any ideas or has this happened to anyone else? Thanks for any and all info.

Pull the cover off and look to be on the safe side.My friends bike just destroyed a bucket and shim at the track and the bike was making a noise like that and he ran it anyway. So just check so you won't have to buy a head like he is going to.

if it's a bucket of shim (found out the hard way) it will make noise at idle sound like bike not hitting on all cylinders rattles real bad shut it off and pull the cover.. cam chain slack can make the same noise when they jump time..

It riuns fine at idle but rev to 4k-6k and rattles bad. Not back firing or spitting and sputtering. Gonna pull valve cover and check bolts and buckets and shims. Have heard that they like breaking the bolts or the cover that holds cams can crack and cause a sound like that also.

Pulled cover and cams, buckets and shims looked good. Could it be a cam chain or weak spring in the adjuster? Or maybe a valve spring but then wouldnt it pop or backfire?

Can a stock one go bad? And if so what would go bad on them? I see that it can only go one way with the rod and spring pushing it against the guide.

new cct on it and still doing it. going in the motor tomorrow. any suggestions on where to look? did the screwdriver to ear and still suspicious of the valve clearances, sure sounds like the valves. nothing at idle but above it starts in.
