need help with my KZ
I have a 77 kz1000, the problem is it keeps fouling plugs but with fresh plugs it runs great. Then if you let it sit for a day or two i have to pull the plugs and clean them. I have also noticed with the engine running that if i pull the #1 plug wire it still runs but if i put it back on and take the #4 plug wire the bike dies. The #1 spark seems very weak (i can hold the wire my hand while the bike is running) But the #4 wire is very strong it nearly knock me off the bike. I think the coil is going bad. Can someone please help me out on this one. Thanks

Number 1 and 4 cylinder runs off the same coil, #2 and 3 use the same coil. You could have a bad wire. To find out just swap the 1 and 4 wires to see if the weak spark follows the wire- if it does, change out the spark plug wire first. If that doesn't do it, then replace the coil.
If you have a manual, it will tell you how to troubleshoot the coil with an ohm meter. Check for secondary and primary resistance. Not sure what the numbers are for a stock coil.

I can't remember, but is the wire molded into the stock coil or can you remove and replace it?

Re: need help with my KZ
They are molded in, i would upgrade to to dyna coils and ignition and find a set of good carbs. Have you done a compresson
or leak down test to see what kinda shape the motor is in? A set of 29 smothbores are great on those motors but they are hard to find and are bringing as much as a set of mikuni flatslides.

Re: need help with my KZ
Sounds like a bad coil to me. KZ's are easy, it can only be fuel or coil. When you said fouled is it black or is it an oily black?

Re: need help with my KZ
Might want to check into a rebuild kit for the carbs. With a fresh motor there shouldn't be any oil fouling the plugs. Sounds to rich, rebuild the carbs or try a hotter plug.
As far as the spark from the coil, start at the cheapest part and go back. Check the wire by switching the one with the hottest spark to the other one, but switch the wires at the coil if you can. Then check the coil with a meter. If it is a bad coil, replace both. You can find them on Ebay for a fair price, just have to watch and be paitent. Hope this helps.

Re: need help with my KZ
the carbs were rebuild just before the motor was. The plugs were black from fuel not oil. My next question is what coils 2 buy?
