Default First time dragger but not biker

Just bought a 1999 ZX7R a couple of weeks ago. Is this a good platform to start out with for drag and would it be a contender with todays bikes in its class. It has a D&D slip on and I just ordered my lowering links to lower it but I dont know how to do the front. Should I slide the forks up or strap it?

Put a new zx14 motor in it and sell the zx 7 motor if it runs you can get good money out of that 7 motor. That is if you plan on drag racing it and want to be fast, or maybe a zx 10 , but if i was gonna go threw all the trouble to do a swap id go big to start with.

Cut the forks use the slide up or down to fine tune your ride height.

The strap limits your turning radius and is for the most part a track use item , although we use them in the street to limit front end travel.

The straps have a tendency to not last forever on a street bike, i know someones gonna say they have had one for forty years and never had a problem, good for you, the rest of us cant make plastic last that long.

Good luck let us know what you decide to do.

yes i would say its a good beginner bike but i when you start talking about todays 1000's and up on motor, no it will not hang but you can eventually thro nitrous on it and it will be running with todays bikes. One thing i can say is you picked a reliable bike to race. The big problem with those bike was it was to heavy for the diplacement they had. Good luck and clean looking zx7 its rare you see a 7 in that good of shape

ZXboy, in the beginning, racing isn't about the biggest motor or fastest
mph. The most important thing is learning how to race, clutch control
reaction time and consistency, if you can learn those things you'll
be a winner. A large majority of famous racers bracket-raced early
    in their career.

X2 on that. Get the basics down first and fast will come on it's own. Nice looking 7 for sure.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah, that does make alot of sense to get the basics down first. Well the bike is lowered 1.5" now and this thing launches straight out the hole, well at least trying to launch it on a newly paved street.

Learning how to race and clutch control. Great words of advice. See so many people going skyward or bogging they cant recover. Get to know the bike and what it likes and go from there.
