Me being new to that class assumed the VETS knew the deal. It's OK, I am building my own Prostreet and it will be built to the rules.

If you want to get technical about it, there's no rule against me putting my intercooler in front of my headlight or in front of my front tire. That would sure resemble a production bike...

So let me see if I have this straight:

You read the rulebook. Then you were told by someone not involved with the tech department at any sanctioning body that the rule was not actually what was written in the rulebook. So at that point you made the assumption that this person was right, and the official rulebook of the sanctioning body was wrong, and you never attempted to get a clarification form the tech department?

    Now it all makes sense.

If you want to get technical about it, there's no rule against me putting my intercooler in front of my headlight or in front of my front tire. That would sure resemble a production bike...
    Two points on this:

    1) You are correct that there is no specific rule against this. The tech director still may not let it race, as it may well fall under general regulations concerning safety and/or intent of the rules of a particular class.

In a class like Pro Street, we try to leave as much freedom as possible to racers to allow them to try new, fresh ideas. That is the primary reason that the class is so diverse and successful. We hope that the racers will not abuse the openness of the rules by trying ridiculous and outlandish things such as this. But it seems to never fail that someone can't keep things reasonable, thus forcing the sanctioning body to impose limitations on everyone.

    2) You haven't seen the 2010 rulebook yet.

PS: I wouldn't pat yourself on the back too much about coming up with something no one else has ever thought about. You obviously never saw Tim Hays' last Outlaw bike. Or maybe you did.

What would make it illegal in front of the light?

As to the 2009 rules, I couldn't answer that until I saw the actual finished bike. Even then, it wouldn't be up to me, (unless I happened to be filling in somewhere) it would be up to whomever was the tech director at that event.

The tech director has a responsibility to ensure that all bikes in competition are both safe and within the intentions and expectations of the class in which they are entered. No rulebook, no matter how big and how technical, will ever be able to cover every possible scenario before it occurs. As a result, the tech director has a somewhat open freedom to maintain these parameters, even if the rules don't specifically include or exclude a particular part or modification.

As to this particular situation, a couple of things come to mind. First, if it is mounted directly in front of the light, blocking the light beam from lighting the road ahead, then it could easily be not allowed. The point of the headlight rule is to have a lighting system that would represent one which would be safe and legal to operate on the street. An intercooler blocking the headlight would not fly with any police officer, and it wouldn't fly at tech either.

As to safety issues, at 200mph an object that big and that far in front of the bike could severely affect the aerodynamic center of pressure and the aerodynamic stability of the bike. It would also be subject to a tremendous amount of structural stresses from both aero and inertial dynamic forces. With components of that size and weight hanging outside of the bodywork, failure of the mounting systems could be very dangerous because it would not have the bodywork or other components to prevent it from flying off of the bike. Then there are issues of safe clearance for front wheel movement, ground clearance, can it withstand the impact of a huge wheelie, etc.

Like I said, I would have to see the actual bike.

Phil, not sure why you have decided to focus on me here, but I am not trying to argue. The bike will be done within the rules and it will have plenty of structral integrity. Also, I would think that if the cooler is centered on the bike, the aero effects and unbalanced issue nill b/c a few bikes have already proven stability at super low ET and high MPH even with such coolers and even turbos hanging off the side of bikes. I do understand your point about the intent of the class. I actually thought about it after seeing multiple import cars with air to air coolers outside the body of the car. So, it has been done before and it should not be that big of a deal.

As for the bike I ride now. Why would I change it? It's the oldest bike in the PST class. It must have been grandfathered in...LOL.

I think it is useless to change the way the bikes are. There is not any performance gain here at all. but i am just a racer
