So does someone just turn their motor mount bolt around and this screws on the end of it?

yes this screws on the end of the engine mount bolt...and you tighten it down like a nut so to speak....ours does not require you to drill your shift cylinder hole larger...in other words it works with a stock shift cylinder hole

Does it connect directly to the knuckle or to the shift rod?

this is just the shift cylinder mount... you will have to connect it to the shift lever.

This may be a crazy question, but what's the purpose of the top mount versus the standard mount airshirfter?

this just mounts the air cylinder straight up and dopwn...some people like this ...our other bracket kit is a true bolt on kit and comes with everythign needed to install...this Top Cylinder mounts just mounts the cylinder to the side of the frame with out you having to drill or tap a hole in the frame. You still need to fabricate the attachment point to the shift lever.

comes down to what you like on the side of your bike..

The reason I asked was because I want to change to drag rear sets and I don't know if the horizontal mount will work with them
